Gender & Women's Studies Program, University of Illinois

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Graduate Program

The Gender and Women’s Studies Department offers a graduate minor.  Students must complete three courses, including either GWS 550, Feminist Theories in the Humanities, or GWS 570, Feminist Research in the Social Sciences.  Students completing a Ph.D. will also include an affiliated faculty member on their committee.

GWS provides an intellectual resource and a supportive community for all faculty, students, and scholars with interests in interdisciplinary feminist studies.  GWS also aims to foster institutional change within and outside the University by integrating work by and about women and gender into existing academic disciplines, providing individuals with the means to integrate feminist theory into their professional work and everyday lives, and supporting social and cultural changes that improve the lives of women and men.

Students completing the graduate minor must submit a petition to the Graduate College prior to graduation. For more information, see instructions for filing a graduate petition on the Graduate Student Academic Services website:
