University Scholarships
Sarah Pettit Doctoral Fellowship
This biennial fellowship provides a year of support to a graduate student, from an institution other than Yale, who is writing a dissertation in LGBT Studies, with lesbian studies particularly encouraged. The winner receives $20,000. The next fellowship runs from September 1, 2010-June 31, 2011. Residence in New Haven and participation in LGBTS is required during the tenure of the fellowship.
To apply, please send a short cover letter describing your engagement with LGBT Studies, a CV, a 1,000-word project description (with one-page bibliography), and a 100-word abstract of your project. Three letters of recommendation should be sent separately, including at least one letter from a member of your dissertation committee.
The deadline for applications is January 15, 2010. Notification will be made by May 1, 2010. The Sarah Pettit Fund was established in 2003 as a permanent endowment to honor and perpetuate the memory of lesbian activist Sarah Pettit, who earned her BA from Yale in 1988. Pettit died in 2003 in the midst of a high profile career as a writer, editor, and LGBTQ advocate. She was for many years the editor-in-chief and vice president of OUT Magazine, which she co-founded in 1992. In 1999, she was appointed the senior editor of Newsweek's Arts and Entertainment section. She served on the advisory board of the New York Lesbian and Gay Anti-Violence Project.

The Marianne A. Ferber endowment was created to honor Marianne A. Ferber’s thirty-eight years of excellence at the University of Illinois in scholarship, research, and teaching on the behalf of women. Twice director of the Women’s Studies Program and Professor Emerita in Economics, Professor Ferber’s colleagues and friends felt that her inspiring legacy to women would be best honored through the promotion of feminist scholarship.
Graduate students from any discipline may apply for the Marianne A. Ferber Graduate Scholarship in Women’s Studies. This $500 scholarship for the 2009-2010 school year will be awarded for the most outstanding dissertation proposal related to Gender and Women’s Studies. Secondary considerations will include the student’s demonstrated commitment to Gender and Women’s Studies and financial need.
Applicants are asked to complete the application form and submit it with a copy of their dissertation proposal, a one-page abstract, and a letter of support from their dissertation advisor to the Gender and Women’s Studies Program before 5:00 PM on Monday, April 27, 2009.

Mary Ramier Grant
Mary Ramier, a 1923 graduate of the University of Illinois, was an attorney and activist from Indianapolis, IN. She was remembered for tackling problems in her Irvington neighborhood, including a petition drive that led to much-needed urban renovation. She also worked at the national level as an attorney and officer for the Mortar Board National Senior Women’s Honorary.
The Mary Ramier Grant is set up to inspire undergraduate women to develop as successful leaders, activists, and professionals. The grant will be awarded competitively and can be used to support research, conference travel, creative projects and other activities that promote the advancement of women. The Gender and Women’s Studies awards committee will determine the amount and number of awards per year based on the merit of individual proposals and financial need. Money will not be awarded for tuition costs or living expenses.
Requirements: All undergraduate women in good standing are eligible to apply. Applicants should write a short essay of not more than 300 words describing their proposed use of the funds, a description of their participation in GWS-related activities on campus (including GWS-related courses they have taken), and the name of a teacher who might be called for reference.

IDA KING STEVENS AWARD
The local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will select a qualifying undergraduate student to receive the Ida King Stevens Award. The scholarship awards $1000 (500 each semester) toward the recipient’s tuition and fees. The recipient will be contacted to participate in appropriate AAUW Branch activities.
The recipient must:
1. Be female.
2. Be a resident of the state of Illinois (as defined by the UIUC standard for in-state tuition).
3. Have experienced an interruption in formal educationof at least two years.
4. Be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as either as a full-time or part-time student.
5. Have demonstrated financial need (as determined by the FAFSA )
6. Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)

PEO Program for Continuing Education
Purpose: The PEO Program for Continuing Education is a grant program providing financial assistance to women whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to resume studies due to changing demands in their lives. They must have a need for financial assistance with their educational expenses to improve their marketable skills.
Grant: The maximum grant is $2000. Lesser amounts may be awarded according to individual needs and available funds. Regardless of the amount awarded, the grant is for one time only. The money is intended as a grant-in-aid for expenses such as tuition, books, transportation, or childcare, necessary to reach the applicant's educational goal. The grant is not to be used for living expenses or to repay education loans.
Eligibility: A woman is eligible to apply for a grant from the PEO Program for Continuing Education if she:
- Is sponsored by a PEO Chapter.
- Is a citizen of the United States or Canada.
- Is studying in the US or Canada.
- Has had at least 24 consecutive months as a nonstudent sometime in her adult life.
- Is within 24 consecutive months of completing her educational goal.
- Is not enrolled in a doctoral degree program, e.g. educational, law, medical or clinical.
Grants may be awarded for academic or technical courses.

Supervised Independent Internships (Unpaid)
General Description:
ORAM is a California-based not-for-profit international organization with a mission to advocate for refugees fleeing sexual or gender based persecution. Our current focus is on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) refugees.
ORAM conducts education and advocacy on behalf of these highly vulnerable refugees. It also provides them with legal counseling and representation as they struggle for security and safe haven. We work with other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and with community-based groups in the US and abroad to achieve our mission. Goals include integration of these refugees’ concerns into government and NGO agendas, as well as substantive policy change. ORAM is looking for committed and highly-qualified volunteers to assist with research, writing and outreach on a variety of issues related to persecution based on gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as sexual and gender based violence (SGBV). This opportunity will be especially relevant to students of LGBT or refugee issues, but will be academically rewarding across many disciplines.
Area I: Writing & Communications (Public Relations & Journalism)

· Research, analysis and writing of advocacy pieces concerning refugees who are LGBT and/or victims of SGBV
· Writing the organization’s Twitter feed

Area II: Research, Analysis & Writing (Advocacy)
· Conducting surveys of and interviewing NGO officials on the inclusion of LGBT refugee & migration issues in international and domestic refugee agendas
· Researching the conditions of LGBTs in countries of origin
· Researching and analyzing government policies regarding LGBT refugees and victims of SBGV
· Research and analysis of conditions of LGBTs and victims of SGBV in countries of persecution or transit
Work Product & Other Program Requirements
At the outset of the internship, each participant will prepare together with the program director Neil Grungras and the participant’s academic supervisor, a formal proposal for a written work related to their internship topic, to be finalized and submitted by the end of the internship. This paper will be additional to any other program requirements. A finalized version will be submitted to the student’s school supervisor for grading and other evaluation.
Students will meet periodically with ORAM Executive Director Neil Grungras, and will be in daily telephone and e-mail contact with Mr. Grungras.
All externs are expected to complete a total of 180 work-hours during the internship. (There is some flexibility as to the exact number of hours completed during a given week.)

Rod R. Blagojevich Governmental Internship
The Office of the Governor provides internship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in experiencing the day-to-day operations of the chief executive's office. The Governor's Office is responsible for overseeing the administration of state departments, agencies, and boards and commissions. Working with the legislature, the Governor's office coordinates policy initiatives and the overall agenda for the state.
The goal of the Rod R. Blagojevich Governmental Internship is to provide students with the opportunity to become familiar with all aspects of the operation of the Governor's office. More specifically, interns will assist administratively, aid in media relations, and, where appropriate, respond to correspondence from Illinois citizens. Interns will be given as much substantive work as possible and will interact directly with staff and assist in state government.
Internships are available year-round on a semester/quarter length basis. The Governor's Office internship requires a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0. Applicants should be organized, self-motivated, and energetic individuals. Students with strong writing and research skills are encouraged to apply. The Institute for Women's Policy Research (IWPR) is a non-profit, research organization that works primarily on issues related to equal opportunity and economic and social justice for women. IWPR is committed to assisting the professional development of students and graduates interested in economic justice for women.
